Canada - Meet the Family

Thanks to e-mail and also family connections in the UK (Thank you Bob and Krys!), I was able to establish that I had a second cousin (or two) in the Vancouver area. As a teenager, I remembered my mother telling me about distant relatives who lived in Aldergrove, B.C. and I had pondered over an atlas trying to imagine what it was like and whether I would ever go there.

Here I was just a stones throw away just 40 odd years later. Having spoken to Sandy Cadwallader, we arranged to meet up. I took the driverless sky train from Vancouver (spooky but efficient) to Port Moody, where Sandy and her husband, Harry met me and took me to their home for lunch and a long chat. We looked at old photographs and the family tree that Sandy had drawn up.

After lunch they took me to Burnaby mountain park, close to where Harry had worked before his retirement. It is somewhat off the tourist map, and perhaps better for that. It had great views over the huge inlet known as Indian Arm and there were totem poles galore.

These plaques tell us a little about the sculptures, for that is what they are.

A very peaceful and beautiful place. Sandy says it's her favourite.

On a personal level, I would like to thank Sandy and Harry for giving me a memorable day. It was lovely to meet her mum, Mary Elizabeth Sanderson. Her husbands grand parents were my great grand parents, all originating from Colne, Lancashire. Our family tree (Lancasters and Sandersons can be downloaded as a PDF file by clicking here.)
