Just before Christmas, the weather went all cold (by British standards) and we had to remember how to deal with ice, snow and frozen screen washers once more. South Wales escaped snow until dawn on the shortest day: December 21st.

Earlier in the week I had climbed Pen y Fan and seen some snow there above 2500 feet or so.

The clouds were scudding from the north as I started my ascent. Looking back, I loved the colours of both landscape and sky here.

No surprise to see a white out at the top. It was blowing a gale and the wind chill was considerable.

I love the way hoar frost produces interesting shapes on the stones.

The light is constantly changing on this day. I love it!

December 21st, shortest day and I have a Christmas Card shot at a nearby church in Welsh St Donats.

This taken alongside Hensol lake. A leaf hanging on in there lit by a low winter sun.

The trick is to get these shots before the sun warms up the scene and melts the snow/frost. Time to go home for a nice strong coffee.
