A year in the life of a tree

'Great photos and a project I have been planning for several years of MY favorite tree.  MY TREE is remarkably similar to YOUR TREE.

Can you see some similarities?  Of course your photos are of much better quality, but this tree has about a foot of snow around it now.  Picture was taken in the fall in Hamilton, MA.' (shown on right)

Rob USA

Not just any old tree, this rather handsome Horse Chestnut tree stands on its own in a field between Penllyne and Craig Penllyne, about two miles from Cowbridge. Each time I pass it on my regular cycle route, I admire it. So, I decided to take a series of pictures covering a year in the life of that arboreal specimen. I started in June 2001, and in May 2002, the series was complete.

June.jpg (29602 bytes) June 2001 July.jpg (36597 bytes) July
August.jpg (32097 bytes) August. Here, the evening light makes the tree look more Autumnal than it should have done. September.jpg (29671 bytes) September

October.jpg (30060 bytes) October. Devoid of Autumn tints this year, this tree like so many others had its leaves ripped off by Autumn gales. November.jpg (32034 bytes) November

December.jpg (34112 bytes) December. Finally all the leaves are gone after a long, relatively mild and wet Autumn. January.jpg (39821 bytes) January was grey and coldish, but without snow or frost

February.jpg (29048 bytes) February was mild and wet and often windy March.jpg (23474 bytes) In March the days are getting longer as the shadows are getting shorter

Tree-7.jpg (25556 bytes) Finally, the weather warms up (a little) and the buds begin to swell

Tree-8.jpg (33216 bytes) It is May and natures cycle is complete.

This is the finished product which is available as a print at £17.50 plus post and packing

It's about 23 inches by 8 inches and is printed on Epson Premium Glossy paper.
