Aberthin, in the Vale of Glamorgan (chez nous!)

Where I live...

Aberthin, in the Vale of Glamorgan

A small village, of about 150 houses, with two pubs, The 'Hare' (and Hounds) and the 'Farmers Arms'; and a stream.

For a real live 1:10,000 map try clicking on here.

Aberthin now has it’s very own website, run the the Village Hall Committee, which can be found here – Aberthin Village Hall website.

As I am no longer on the village hall committee, I am more than happy to hand over the reigns to Andy Coleman who is!

Aberthin is a village in the 'Vale of Glamorgan' in South Wales; a lozenge shaped area of mostly lush farmland enclosed to the north by the M4, the south by the Bristol channel, the east by Cardiff, and the west by Bridgend. Just 150 feet above sea level and situated in the Thaw valley just one mile north of Cowbridge, it has some protection from the strong winds that blow off the Bristol Channel.

Snow or intense cold weather is rare, rain is not! Below is a scene from the top of Stalling Downs on one of those rare cold days.

Why am I here?

Wales has plenty of countryside, largely unspoilt. Miles of pretty scenery and usually quiet roads. Lots of winding lanes nearby which are ideal for biking, my main hobby. The coast is only a few miles away, there's a feeling of the west country with some thatched houses, even a thatched pub or two. Plenty of rain, but then, it is Wales.  Mild winters, warm summers.

Aberthin is comprised of about 150 houses, just a mile from Cowbridge and about 12 miles from Cardiff, capital city of Wales. in turn, Cardiff is about 150 miles from London, about 2 hours from Heathrow. And long may it remain so! We can tap into the 'real' world should we need too, but I like village life. Having lived much of my working life in cities around the UK (London, Manchester and Glasgow), it's rather nice to 'chill out' amid a quiet and relatively pastoral scene.

I have lived here for over 25 years now...

Mike,

Discovered your site a while ago and was back on it this morning. I was brought up in Aberthin (family lived between 1965 and 1997 at 'Thornfield', on corner of Llanquian Lane and road up to the Downs) and the site brings memories flooding back. You're a very talented and creative chap and the site is clearly a labour of love for you! Keep it going, the pictures of Aberthin and further afield (Cardiff Bay, Beacons and Welsh beaches) are quite superb and much appreciated by viewers like me.

With best wishes and many thanks for the brilliant site.
Richard
