Morecambe, yes Morecambe and The Stones

I met Mike Wilcock in our local photographic society and was fascinated by his stories of booking such 60's icons as The Stones, the Troggs, Herman's Hermits, the Merseybeats and The Doodlebugs. Who? Well Mike was busy marketing the Doodlebugs who didn't quite make it to national fame, although there must be quite a few people in the north who remember them.

Mike was one of the two resident DJ's at the Floral Hall in those far off and heady days of the 60's. he has folders full of memorabilia of his time and I took copies of just a few of them to put up here for all to see. When he eventually moved down south, he did so with his DJ partner, Ken Parker to London town, where they made tapes for Radio Caroline ("Your all day music station") which I remember so well! I also shared Mikes passion for making tape recordings off the radio by all manner of devious means. Mike used to connect his reel to reel machine across the speaker terminals of his valve radio.  No such luxury as audio out terminals in those days!

Should you wish to contact Mike who lives just a mile away from the Bakerlite homeland, send him an e-mail to wilcock.michael@talk21.com  He does talks on his DJ'ing life experiences to groups in South Wales where, like me, he has taken early retirement. He keeps himself busy following steam trains around the country making high quality videos and stills for interested clients.

Wild Thing is the one Rock record that most associate with The Troggs. here they are, all dressed up like the smart kids next door. Well, that was how it was in the 60's.

troggs.jpg (59341 bytes) The Group that didn't smile, that was their image. Your actual Rolling Stones. stones-2.jpg (23451 bytes)
stones-1.jpg (27334 bytes) and this is how they looked from Mike's position off stage in The floral hall, Morecambe as taken by his Ilford Sportsman camera. That's something else I share with Mike as my first 'proper' camera.

Bill Wyman, Mick Jagger and part of Brian Jones.
