Our trip was nearly over but there was another pretty special visit to fit in: The Mayflower.

A pretty formation on the beach.

I always enjoy seeing signs that we don't have at home (in the UK)

15 minutes of fun?? I don't understand. Photography should be a lifetime of fun and maybe a little cheaper than golf.

More Halloween stuff in Chatham.

and then we are on our way back to Boston and decide to spend some time in Plymouth because that's where the Pilgrim Fathers replica ship: The Mayflower is just waiting for exploration.
The story of the crossing of the Atlantic in 1957 by the replica is just about as fascinating as the original crossing.

This placard tells you a little about the original inhabitants of this part of the USA.

And this shows the origins of the original passengers of that first historic journey.

The museum is a fascinating one and I thoroughly recommend it to you if you find yourself in Plymouth.

The navigational aids were, shall we say, interesting. This was a 'chip log' and if I remember correctly recorded speed and distance.

Down below decks there were a few surprises in store

Like a brick stove in the galley

and one of the 'original' passengers telling us about the journey, what she ate and how the voyage was. The gentleman on the left of this picture is a direct descendant of the Hancock family who were on that first sailing some four hundred years ago.

The Pilgrim Father sat, oracle like, and answered our questions; as long as they were relevant to the mid 17th century!

A sneak preview of the captains cabin. Not bad for 1620.

This is where it all started: The united states of America, that is. This is said to be the rock at the exact point at which the USA's settlers first alighted. I bet they didn't carve 1620 into the rock till a bit later, though. We are on our way back to the car when I spotted the red 'belisha beacon' which I han't clocked before.

Presumably when you pull the handle, the red light flashes and men start running around the nearest fire station.

Clearly this is not intended to be a red light district!

One more beach shot: a man taking his pet seagull for a walk.

Yes, the bit we all love to hate, waiting to fly home.

It was a great holiday though. The American people were all very courteous and helpful to us throughout our short fourteen day excursion through six states.

We'll be back!
