Barcelona

Barcelona is one of the more 'special' places in Europe that I have been fortunate to visit. It has the touch of one amazing gentleman: Antonio Gaudi. Other places on the web will tell you about the life story of that remarkable and audacious designer of architecture. Although he died in 1926 with his masterpiece unfinished, Sagrada Familia continues to be built amid International controversy.

Elsewhere in the city, outrageous and exciting architecture continues into the 21st century. I have tried to capture some of these images and you can share them with me in the pages below.

Just loved your photos of Barcelona, your comments and much of what you said about the town, the people and the atmosphere. Should you really want to engage yourself in something spectacular come to my hometown, Oporto, in north Portugal ( only a two hour flight from Heathrow or Stansted, if your prefer low cost flights) and as a bonus you will see one of the most fantastic places in Europe, and one of its best kept secrets : the valley of the river Douro ( the Golden river) birthplace of one of the most beautiful wines in the world : Port wine. Did I manage to sharpen your appetite ?

[Yes!]

'I live in Barcelona city and I saw the Barcelona's photos, are very interesting and very beauty. I love your work.
Sorry for my bad English!'
Marc.

Our first evening was spent in the Four Cats restaurant with friends and Jean's daughter, Caroline who just happened to be passing through! Picasso and Gaudi and other young men of artistic bent used to meet here and enjoy drinking and eating together.

We were there early by Spanish (sorry, Catalan) standards. However, the place soon filled up. it is well known for the gallery from where you get a splendid view of the fun below.

Mother and daughter, Jean and Caroline. Even the manhole cover outside the restaurant is personalised.

A last look back as we head for the centre. The ancient cathedral, however, is somewhat out of sight behind 21st century scaffolding.

Upon return to the outskirts of the city, I take a look at the regular weekend craft market.
Spices, teas galore. and quite a few customers enjoying browsing in the balmy evening  air.

Bread is also being freshly baked in a clay oven.

One need not go hungry here...
The following morning, cyclists are out taking advantage of the many cycle tracks of the city. Shopping Malls are not far away, all human life is in here; shopping...

Jean and i shoot off to the seaside: Sitges about 50 K's away.

It's quite busy, colourful and a pleasant way of spending half a day.
Not sure what this is, but it was attached to a big succulent. This is the hot end of an ancient cannon.

Barcelona contd.
