Train (bits) spotting on Barry Island

I joined a photographic club in 2001 (The Vale Photographic Club-no web site as yet!) They have weekly meetings throughout the year and in summer, these are often on location. Barry Island in the south of the Vale used to have a huge collection of steam locomotives rescued from scrap by an enterprising business man. Gradually, they were sold off to steam preservation societies around the UK. One or two remain and are in the hands of a group of volunteers for eventual renovation. Mike Wilcock arranged for us to descend on their heavy treasures with film and chip alike. The only problem was getting that 'special' picture without getting the rest of the club in shot. Many of mine hit the cutting room floor, below are the remains of our sunny June evening.

All are taken on a Canon EOS 10D digital camera.

train-1.jpg (48750 bytes) Hunslett is the name of the diesel shunter that later was to give some of us a bumpy shaky ride that would once upon a time been reserved for coal wagons, I guess. train-2.jpg (43099 bytes) The main problem of digital cameras is not losing information in burnt out highlights. The sun glancing down the side of this beast whilst adding drama does begin to lose info near the front of the loco. 1/90th sec @ F9.5

This was taken at 1/6th second F32 in order to get the depth of field to cover the considerable distance.

1/15th@F32 for this wonderful selection of corrosion colours

I liked this  singular lump of coal sitting on this ledge. No, I didn't put it there. 1/6th@F32

Our driver backs up to our brake van to give us a ride across the Barry frontage.

All's clear as we trundle at a stately 5mph.

Is it a beach...or a parking lot?

A derelict pumping station languishes behind a squeaky clean and newly built railway platform at the end of our short journey.
