On the Gironde estuary in a superbly defensive position is the town of Blaye with its impressive citadel which is also pretty HUGE.

The day had started off wet but the sun came out and burnt off any early dampness.

You have been warned! Pretty impressive approach. When the French build something, they do it with style!
Cobbles like this are very familiar to myself; I grew up in a cotton town in North East Lancashire.
Once inside the Citadel, one can see a pleasant, protected area that would presumably have once supplied the soldiers of the Citadel. It is a huge area as it was of enormous strategic importance.

We all stood at this splendid viewpoint for some time watching the sights and sounds of the Gironde.

This old bike appealed to me with a rather larger than life bottle behind it.

And here you see it in context; outside a small restaurant: all within the citadel.

A little later and we can see some locals enjoying a pitch of boules.

Hi,

I am currently stuck at home because of my back which hurts a lot and makes me feel bad... As I have some time, I spend some time on Internet and as I was looking for pictures of New York (maybe my favourite city), and yours are great, especially the panoramic one (270 degrees).
Have you ever been to San Francisco? This is a place where you could make amazing pictures, and beautiful panoramic ones (there is also Brice Canyon and Grand Canyon, 3 hours from Frisco only, the better place on earth to relax and have a rest, it is so quiet and the nature in this part of America is really great). Now you have to go there...

I also saw that you went to Blaye near Bordeaux, I went there 4 months ago for a trip in the vineyards and I found this was really a nice little city with a great view from the Citadelle. Now you also have to go to Bourg, only 20 minutes from Blaye, which is on top of the Gironde estuary. And just to give you desire to go back to France, I attached one of my favourite pictures, the city of Saint Emilion, that I took in last September...

Keep taking pictures which give us the opportunity to travel from home...

Many thanks,
Sebastien Metz

Hi
Just wanted to say thank you for the wonderful photographs on your site I came across them by typing in Blaye, we stay in the Citadel every year on the caravan site as our friends live in Fouillac.
It is a rainy day here in Lancashire and having just spoken to my friend on the phone
I really missed France so in I typed and came across your site more by accident than anything,
oh it cheered me up so much
Many thanks
