Bordeaux (the city) has a population of 215,000 and sits amidst on the banks of the Garonne just a few K's south of the confluence with the Dordogne.

That's the geography over, take a look at the city:

La Cathédrale Saint-André is centre stage in this shot.

Impressive interior, n'est pas?

Behind the choir, the 50m (164ft) belfry, the 15th-century Tour Pey-Berland, was climbed by myself.

The stairway was extremely narrow, as they tend to be. Fortunately not too many people were rushing to pay to climb.
Looking up toward the golden figure from the highest level to which we were allowed.

and looking down to my patient touring partners.

The view was spectacular, the flying buttresses featuring in this shot.

looking in the other direction, downtown Bordeaux and the river in the distance.

back at ground level, there is much to see, but as always not enough time to do it properly. These two have no apparent time worries!

Like many European cities, the tram takes the strain, quite a modern high ceilinged vehicle.

In 1935, things were a little more genteel. This was in daily use for tourists.

Come in number 54, your time is up...

Of course, the city has a modern aspect as well. No French city is complete without a Napoleon statue. Or is it a statue of Liberty?
That was enough of big cities, we wanted to see the quieter side of The Gironde.
