Boston Massachusetts

Once unpacked, we walked to our nearby train terminal and took the 45 minute journey into tow. Note the security checks. It didn't take too long to find a restaurant that appealed: The Union Oyster House restaurant which is the USA's oldest continuously run restaurant.

And very good it was too.

My first taste of Lobster, an experience I wanted to repeat.

Somewhat jet lagged, we head back for the MBTA (Metro) system.

Limo's and sky scrapers go together, I guess. The Quincy Market area is a lively and fun place. It used to be on the edge of the harbour and was a pretty smelly place until the 1970's when it had a huge 'makeover'.

Lots of food and craft type stalls both inside the Faneuil Hall and outside. Too much to take in for two tired tourists.

The old state house stands proudly amidst its newer high rise buildings.

I like the lighting scheme.

The following morning, the rain has gone and we walk down to the Riverside station for a day packed with walking. If you go to Boston, then you have to start your perambulation with the Freedom Trail. It's either a painted red line (still wet here) or sometimes bricks laid in the pavement.

Although its only two and a half miles, there is much to see, and you need to allow at least half a day.

This gent was one of many who add life to Boston's history by being dressed to the appropriate period: early 18th century.

Park Street Church visible from the start, but we have to take a left through Boston Common.

It's fairly early and there are a few people sleeping rough.

A glimpse of the gold dome of the Massachusetts State House.

Its one of those 'wow, must see' buildings.

'Charles Bullfinch designed its fine neo classical facade.

'The New State House in Boston by Bulfinch has English precedents -- and those Dutch. Bulfinch's design led to his design of the Capital in Washington and, thus, to dozens in the Roman dome style. The finest is that at Providence.'

A perfect setting for such an important building.

It's free to go inside, (as most of the key buildings on the trail are) so we did.

Still very much a fully functioning building. A guide was about to start one of the regular free tours.

The beautiful murals and statues tell the history of Massachusetts and hence of the dawn of the U.S.A.
