Colne, Lancashire

....is where I spent the first 18 years of my life and has, inevitably, been photographed by me over the years. Actually, I was born in Trawden then moved to Cottontree at the age of four.

Some of the pictures below are from those years of the 1960's and hopefully carry a little evocation of the times. It is quite high up (600+feet above sea level) on the western side of the Pennines, has a high annual rainfall, of about 1200mm, and is only a few miles from the Lancashire/Yorkshire boundary. It grew in importance under 'King Cotton' in the 19th and early 20th century.

Colne has suffered several decades of decline, but is surrounded by interesting and dramatic moorland scenery. There are several pages of areas near to Colne accessed by the buttons below.

There are more Pictures of me and my family as it was in the last century here

Hi Mike!
I have just come across your web site quite by chance after looking for some other subject in Colne. I thoroughly enjoyed browsing the site and like so many more I was very impressed by the beauty of your photographs. I am a 'Colner' born 1957 and bred although I am presently living in Carlisle having made the move with my husbands management position with Stagecoach UK Bus.
I was born and lived in as our marital home for twenty years on Charles Street in the corner house which looked down Granville Street. Both my grandparents  lived by us too one set in York Street and one set in Portland Street. My maiden name was Storey. My family are still in Pendle, Colne, Nelson,Fence and Earby so we still spend much time there. People up here in Cumbria always ask if we are from Bolton,I suppose we have the now famous Peter Kay to thank for that! Others ask if we are from Yorkshire much to my husbands disgust who is fiercely proud of being a Lancastrian! One day in the near future we are hoping to move back down that area, just when who knows? From your photographs I have concluded that your family home in Winewall was the Post Office,is that right? If so the building now is in a sorry state as I'm afraid are so many once fine houses in Colne. I hope Colne will see a revival one day soon,it really is in need of some TLC and it makes me sad to see it.
Thankyou for the interesting site and the memories of Colne and area albeit in better days!

Hi,
Just stumbled onto your site after trying to find photos of Colne without success. I was born in Colne in 1942 in the maternity home on Tittybottle Lane. We lived for a few years in the top house on Cuerden St. before moving to Nelson for a couple of years. Moved back to Colne in about1949 to live in the Shepherds Arms a beer house . Left Colne after a couple of years as my parents took a pub in Yorkshire but I still love to return to visit relatives and l aways feel comfy when i get there.

hi, very interested to see your web site. I was born in Colne in 1938 and spent 16 years there before moving to the feared LONDON.

My name was Hazel Stout and I went to Primet secondary modern. Being a few years older than you, I doubt we have any friends in common, but it is nice not to have to say "near Burnley" when saying where I came from. Nice to see a bit of Colne on the net.

I read your web site and my family are on it. [winewall] I am Reggie Dixon's sister, Jennifer.

I would like to correspond with Diana Mather in Spain.
I have photo of her father and Jim and Gladys from Winewall.

The web pictures are lovely and brought a tear to my eyes.

My wife and I lived in Trawden until 1995 when we moved to California. We really enjoyed looking at the pictures on your site. Mick and Jan   (USA)
Thanks for the opportunity to see a few photos of Trawden as it used to be. Tim
Thank you for sharing your great pictures of Winewall. My family used to live at 23 New Row, Winewall, next door to Douglas and Margaret Barrett, we knew a lot of people mentioned in your editorial. It brought back a lot of memories. My Father was Chairman of Trawden Forest, Winewall and Wycoller from approx 1955 - 1960 . Anne Anderson   (Canada).
I have just come across your sight looking for info on Wycoller.  My mother in law was very interested as she used to live at Beaver Farm.....It brought a tear to her eye looking at Beaver Farm Janet   (UK)
What a serendipitous stumble that I made about an hour ago, this cold Canadian night !  For the past hour spent looking over your magnificent presentation of dear old Trawden, I thank you over and over. Andrew   (Canada)
Dear Mike,   how wonderful to find you as in the late 1800's my great-grandmother came from Colne.  The family name is Pilling, her first name, Nell.  She married my great-grandfather William Beach and I think it was in Blackpool where he was a barber.
My aunt (close to 90 years old)  thinks we may still have distant relatives there.  I live in Victoria, B.C. Canada.  I am 63 years old and have started to realize time is marching on far to fast and how important family is.
