Cornwall

I haven't been to Cornwall for many years; about 25 actually, so when Jean suggested that we took a 'four nights for the price of three' in a rather nice hotel near Padstow, it didn't take me too long to agree.

We took Jean's father 'Don Eduardo' and Beryl his Lancastrian lady friend in late September down empty motorways (well, empty ish) and through the lush Somerset levels and on to Devon and eventually Cornwall.

padstow-1.jpg (22798 bytes) The itinerary was pretty easy to agree. None of us had been to the Eden Project or seen for ourselves the lost gardens of Heligan. Lands End and St. Michaels Mount had to be slotted in, and I wanted to see the Levant beam engine, being the only working one of its kind  left in the UK.

Join us now in Padstow; gourmet home to Rick Stein devotees. He is a much followed TV chef of these shores and seems to have taken over most of the eating places in Padstow.

First impressions are that the pubs are alive with hanging baskets. (to be sung to the Julie Andrews tune!)

The harbour itself is as delightful as they get. padstow-5.jpg (60234 bytes) padstow-6.jpg (82737 bytes) padstow-7.jpg (81894 bytes)
padstow-8.jpg (104502 bytes) Here was a little mystery, what were they fishing for; or had someone dropped their mobile phone into the mud? padstow-9.jpg (71001 bytes) No doubting who's in charge on this craft.

and the sun shone too, 'just perfick' as a well known TV character would say.

worthiness of this craft. It looks as though it has had bits built on over the years. Do boats have to have an M.O.T.?

Hi Mike,

I came across your site when looking for my ancestor - Richard Henry Davies, son of David (Woodward/Woodwell?) Davies and Mary Ann Powell who was born in Cowbridge, Wales around 1823/4 - then I clicked on the Cornwall link, as I have ancestors there as well - and now have bookmarked your site hoping to inspire my husband!  Ian, my husband, went on to dialysis two years ago and is waiting for a kidney transplant - and even though he is still working full-time and is healthy - he just seems to have lost a bit of his spirit and I want him to stop waiting for a transplant that could take a few years and live again.  Ian always wanted to do photography for a hobby when we were younger - but back in the days before computers and digital cameras it was an expensive hobby we couldn't afford.  But, only today I was sitting on the beach with him talking to him about taking photographs and getting a website together just to share his photos and now I've come across yours to inspire him!  He has a digital camera, 10 meg website, a computer, and the programmes to do what he wants with those photos ... and now a wonderful website to inspire him ... he has no excuse!  Thank you for your wonderful site and for the inspiration for my husband; if you are interested I will get him to contact you and let you know how he goes.

Thank you again,
Keryn Rivett. Australia
Mike, Do you have any pictures from Cornwall? I've been told its quite beautiful there. I live in Michigan (USA) but have ancestors from Falmouth (shipwrights) and Swansea/Cardiff, Wales. I found your pictures truly breath taking...will look forward to seeing many more.
Thank you for sharing,
