'Entre Deux Mers'-Day 2

Tuesday September 4th

Wednesday dawned as Tuesday, misty and cool. As we progressed southwards we witnessed the transition of crops from maize to sunflowers and vines as the day wore on and we descended into the Loire valley and entered the beautiful city of Angers. Bike lanes took us speedily into the heart of the city past beautiful floral displays and over various tributaries of the river Loire.

day-2-1.jpg (41461 bytes) This splendid Château is at Challain la Potherie near Segré. It does look to have a little problem with one of it's 'antennae', though. day-2-2.jpg (42855 bytes) A stop for water and a loo, show that even the simple things in life can be dangerous.

We were looking for bananas at the time before the bewitching hour of noon when all shops close. I saw this old smith cum garage cum cycle repair shop. No bananas, though.

day-2-3.jpg (272605 bytes) As we approach the valley of the great river Loire, there are some well heeled châteaux about. Between the 15th and the 18th centuries, more than 200 chateaux were built in the Loire valley for the King. he lived in each for about a month at a time. day-2-4.jpg (46881 bytes)
Crossing the Loire was a landmark, or should that be watermark? Lunch was good and enjoyable just south of the great river. day-2-5.jpg (44902 bytes) The towers and spires of Angers in the background as we cross one of the tributaries of the Loire.

Angers is a 'Ville Fleurie'.

day-2-7.jpg (34126 bytes) The Château of Montreuil Bellay on the last leg of our days cycling. Here I rang our friend, Serge Pouit and he cycled out to meet us on the outskirts of Loudun. His wife, Suzanne had prepared a feast to satisfy even the hungriest cyclist. Note, no time to change for dinner! We were even interviewed, in French, for an article about our efforts in the local paper. day-2-8.jpg (36741 bytes)
