On our way in to the valley we were buzzed by a fighter plane which just emerged from below us at enormous speed and noise.

This is the valley from where IT emerged and eventually returned.

The mining around here was for the rather prosaic (but useful) Borax. This area of vicious sharp salt deposits is known as the Devil's golf course.

It had been the bottom of a lake a long time ago.

This young couple were using it as a photographic backdrop.

This is the lowest point in Death Valley.

 -286 feet.

The end of just another day in one of the hottest and driest places on the planet.

More of the Borax connection.

One of the huge steam locos used to haul the Borax to market (as it were)

On trails, not a steel track.

The road out looks more like a computer simulation than the real thing.

Much cooler this morning...

Here it is, the lowest golf course on the planet.

There is plenty of local natural water to keep the greens watered.

Next, it's off on the long road to Vegas.

Mad, mad place! See you there.
