Industrial Archaeology around Wales

Back to the 'Golden Age' of Monochrome. These were actually colour pictures taken in 1985, but, I think look more appropriate in black and white. Another good source of info on Industrial Archaeology can be found at http://www.n-e-x-u-s.com/archaeology/ Here you can find archaeology related news, books and web resources.

dock2.jpg (16951 bytes) Knocking down the old in Cardiff Bay...

Much has changed, take a look at The Bay now.

ruin.jpg (51645 bytes) This was taken 'up country' off the Drovers Road between Aberystwyth and Rhayader. Sadly, it is there no more.
Now this is what you call a serious piece of kit. It's Aberthaw 'A' generator, producing lots of kilowatts from a few pieces of coal. I am told that it has now been demolished; gone.

aberthaw1.jpg (37884 bytes) ...and this, for those of you who don't know, is one of Britains two working Transporter bridges. This spans the river Usk, at Newport, South Wales.

it has since been restored and is in full working order.

Transporter1.jpg (39120 bytes)
Transporter2.jpg (31280 bytes) In 1985, it was possible to pay a small amount to climb the tower and walk over the top. Not for the faint hearted; I know.

One can now make this scary trek, but only on two days a year. I know not which two!

Something rather mystical (or mistical) about this view from part way up. Transporter3.jpg (21251 bytes)

This is when it starts to get scary. Lots of rusty metal and not a lot between.

Transporter4.jpg (40484 bytes) Transporter5.jpg (31252 bytes) You've got to admire the engineers who designed and built it.
Transporter6.jpg (35719 bytes) The Gondala, not very Italian, but floating nonetheless. Transporter7.jpg (37976 bytes) looking down through the trembling steelwork as the gondola rushes by below.

It's all held together by cables and struts...

Transporter8.jpg (44034 bytes) Transporter9.jpg (20792 bytes) The view makes it worthwhile; almost!

In 1982, when I first moved to Wales, there was the legendary collection of old Locomotives on Barry Island that I wanted to visit with my camera.
