Kyrenia is the Greek name for one of the nicest
harbours that I have ever seen. The Turkish name is Girne, and that is
the name we had to look out for on the long wheel base Mercedes 'buses'
that ply between the capital and the coast. The ride was an interesting
one. The car was at least 30 years old and sounded it. The driver was
probably more than twice as old as the car and had no scruples about
breaking every speed limit at frightening speeds before we had even left
the city. It was then a 20 minute hair raising journey at high speed
with no seatbelts. Some of the time, I just didn't dare look out!
I am in the middle row just behind the driver of the
three row taxi holding up to six people.
On our walk down to the harbour, we see a man tending
to his Harley Davidson.
I was last here in 1986, it's just as
beautiful as I remember it.
The flower of a banana plant, no less.
Time for a beer and to enjoy the boaty view.
Later, we take a higher viewpoint for a seafood
lunch. What else?
A 'posh' boat comes in.
whilst we enjoy a glass or two of Rose
wine with our meal
Boats are always so photogenic.
Mountains loom behind the port.
On the way back, we pass a wrecked car on a stand by
the roadside to deter speeding drivers.
It
didn't work on our driver...
I can manage the Lefkosa bit, but I can't even begin
to pronounce the other bit!
This
old post box was seen in the Turkish occupied part of Nicosia!
