Martel was to be our stopover for a few days. It is in Lot et Quercy but is close to the Dordogne, which confused me at the point of booking!

We stayed in a very nice Chambres d'Hote run by Monsieur and Madam Gaspard just a couple of K's south of Martel. The town is delightful and historic, yet not too touristy or too big. I could easily live in this area.

As in all French towns, market day is the best time to sample the 'ambience'.
Oh dear, I've been spotted! All that loverley drink...

Down the hill from our Chambre d'hote is the very pretty little village of Cressye which was once a port on the Dordogne. Nowadays, its le camping and kayaks.

Drop dead gorgeous comes to mind.

This is the Mairie where one can borrow the (huge) key for the small and ancient church opposite. 12th century.

Meanwhile, back at the 'ranch' sundry peacocks gave me a display of their colours.

First the rear end. Then the 'I'm trying to catch your attention' shot.

And finally, in full glorious Technicolor, a male peacock.

More mundane, perhaps, but another pretty piece of nature.

Around the corner, and I'm testing my Canon 100-400 mm lens on birds.

Clearly, this is a hunting bird of some kind, but it wouldn't let me get near enough to get a close up.

This was the lovely Labrador acting as door keeper for our chambre d'hote. I am not really into dogs, but this one was a beauty!
