North to Portland

Our feet still suffering from a great deal of walking in Boston, twas time to take our Chevy to the Levy, well northwards along the coast through Massachusetts into New Hampshire through such English place names as Portsmouth, Bath and to Portland, our next overnight stop.

Portsmouth was our first port (literally) of call. It has a long history of building warships as it sits on one of New England's finest natural harbours. It became wealthy on the timber trade with Britain and the West Indies being two of its biggest customers.

A huge restoration programme has saved numerous fine buildings from destruction and this was our reason to stop off and spend some time taking a look.

A bright blue sky, the proud flag flying in front of a fine clapboard exterior: this is what we had come to see.

Halloween is big around here, as were to discover. very big and very orange here.

This, my friend Nigel tells me, is a Monarch, Danaus plexippus. 'Lives all over North America but moves southwards in autumn. Supposed to get sluggish in autumn and winter. It makes itself obvious to birds 'cos it tastes awful.' So this is how it's done; clapboard exterior in the making. Vertically hung tiles of a water resistant timber. (natural or chemical?)

And then I saw this scene, like looking back in time! I didn't know what the car was, but I knew it was pretty rare. Closer inspection was to be had.

It was a Cord and in pretty good condition. I had never seen one for real before.
Now that's what I call a manifold!

Another pretty handsome car. It says 'Royal' on the side of the hood, but i don't know what the make is. Can anyone help me?

I believe this is Governor Langdon's fine house. President George Washington has been a guest here.

Just a shot of the high street on our way back to the car.
This pretty little lighthouse was one of many we saw on our meander northwards.

Does anyone out there know its name? Or that of the beach shown here?

It was sunny and very warm, more like summer than autumn.

We did have a walk around Portland but found more interest in this floating restaurant where we had an excellent meal that evening.
Not sure where I saw this, but it showed the strong southerly wind that was bringing us temperatures in the 80's. And a touch of the homeland here for any Irish tourists. I wonder if the Guinness tastes as good as it does in Dublin? I tasted it in the brewery there and it was superb.
