This is Rockport, a tiny village with a lot going for it.
It was pretty, quiet and very photogenic. |
This is Andre the seal. Not heard of him?
Well, a children's book and a film were made about him so Rockport
commemorates him with this statue. |

Only in America can you find Ice machines in the blazing
sun for the convenience of the sailors here abouts! Or do you know
different? |
I was beginning to get bike withdrawal symptoms by now. |
Maybe we should trade in the Chevy for a Harley? |
or a classic car? |
Well, we stuck with the hire car, I'm
beginning to think that I should have paid extra for the cabriolet.
Bar Harbor, we have arrived. |
the sun is going down in the west (which we
can't see!) but we can enjoy the serenity of other peoples boats on a flat
calm. At the turn of the Century, this small village
had become the summer playground for America's millionaires. The town had
some elegant mansions (known as cottages) which were just used as holiday
getaways. However, the first World war followed by the great depression
caused many of them to be abandoned and in 1947 a fire swept through the
area and reduced most to ruins. |
Meanwhile, we'll just admire other peoples
boats. |
That elegant sailing ship in the background ain't as old
as it looks; built in 1997, I believe. |
A working boat... |
...and a pleasure boat |
Time for a walk on the shore path around the
peninsula before the sun finally hits the deck. |
We are not alone.
I am feeling quite hungry too. And we might be eating
seafood also. |
We take a sundowner in a Bar/Restaurant and
are entertained by some rather pleasant live Jazz. |
| That's another day gone and we are really
settling into holiday mode now. Tomorrow we are going to explore the
Acadia
National Park. |
