Mono Lake is one of the strangest
looking places in the USA and possibly one of the oldest lakes in the
world. It's about 60 square miles of alkaline water at the eastern foot
of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Having no natural outlet, summer
evaporation plus some diversion to L.A. has caused it to shrink to one
fifth of its original size. |
 |
| above is the first view of that extra ordinary lake
as one descends towards it along the 395. |

| Then, it's a long, long climb to almost 10,000 feet
to enter Yosemite on it's eastern boundary: The Tioga Pass. Spectacular!
I loved it. |
