The Bay

Norwegian-Church.jpg (19276 bytes) The Norwegian church, once used by sailors from that country who often visited Cardiff Docks (with wooden pit props for the coal mines)

Some nice floating 'pads'

marina-1.jpg (22688 bytes) Cardif-Bay12.jpg (36690 bytes) A lightship, which is, I believe, open to the public.

This amusing creation sits atop one of the buildings by the waterfront and acts as a weathervane, I believe.

weather-vane.jpg (30093 bytes) There are also some interesting pieces of work at ground level.

A touch of ancient and modern. The dragon is the modern (yet ancient) mascot of Wales in front of this newly renovated waterfront building.

It is now a bar and a trendy restaurant.

Just around the corner (a few K's) is the Genteel resort of Penarth, with its large elegant houses looking across the Severn estuary to Somerset.
The Captains of bygone ships built them and chose to live here away from the everyday bustle and grime of 19th century Cardiff. Today, it is a fashionable suburb of Cardiff, with good transport links to Cardiff and the Bay. There is now a regular water bus service between the two.

Penarth has its own marina with plenty of up-market boats.

A few years ago, a friend and colleague of mine, Geoff Titterton on his boat Eclipse, left for a round the world mission. He called in recently to see me, but his boat is now in Trinidad having successfully crossed the Atlantic in 22 days. He rejoins his boat in early 2004.
