Atop the
B.T.
building, which overlooks Cardiff's Millennium Stadium, there's a bit of
building going on.
|
 |
Taken
in December 2002, it is now clearly finished and towers above the stadium.
In fact, one of my spies tells me that it was built to take over as
Cardiff's highest building again. There are aerials up there too under
that circular skirt. |

The Castle
Arcade; they each have
their own character.
|
 |
This is the
Morgan Arcade, one of the more 'up market' ones. |
 |
 |
Brains Brewery
started here in the city centre, and still operates just a stones throw
from St. David's Hall and the main shopping area. Having said that, I
passed the Brewery the other day, and it has now been transformed into
a residential/restaurant area. |
 |
This is what it looks like from St. Mary St. |
|
and
when you enter: |
 |
The Church of
St. Mary (I used to think: see pane below!) is now surrounded by shops and restaurants.
Topo Gigio is my
favourite Italian restaurant, just opposite the Church. Excellent Italian
food with really good service. |

I notice on your
collection of Cardiff Slides, one of them shows the church of
St.Mary.
Well, the church of
St. Mary
was partly swept away in the great floods of 1607 and had to be
demolished. The slide is showing the Church of St. John the
Baptist or we call it St. John’s- it’s the
oldest surviving building in the centre of Cardiff, apart from the
Castle. Sorry to have to point this out, but it’s better to be
accurate. [I am always happy
to be corrected]
By the way- the
images are great and will greatly support our work on the History of
Cardiff in the classroom,
Mrs Debbie Chapman
| If you would like to see some old pictures of
Cardiff, I have about one hundred that have been scanned in from
slides here. |

|
Just around the
corner is the Hayes Island snack bar, not quite Covent Garden, but all part of the character of the
city. |
 |
There's the new Marriot Hotel beyond one
of the cities classic buildings, currently being renovated. |
 |
 |
Cardiff has a large International Arena. Size
wise, it fits between St David's Hall and Millennium Stadium. I was there
on the opening night when Shirley Bassey sang to a packed house, only
hours after the toilets had been installed and the huge new desk had been
delivered to Reception. |
 |
This is where Cardiff's famous 'Brains'
Bitter is brewed. Now outside the city centre, but still close enough to
savour the hops if the wind is blowing in the right direction. |
|
There is a walk through continuous parkland
all the way from the centre of town to Llandaff. Or, of course, the other
way round, which is what I do when working on match days. |
 |
All cities have their 'retail
therapy' centres. Cardiff is no exception, the Capitol Centre is one of
them. |
 |
 |
Cardiff has some notable public
buildings just on the north side of the Boulevard de Nantes. This is the
City Hall. On a rainy day. |
 |
The city didn't use to have any 5 star
hotels. It now has two, here is the Hilton. St Davids, in the
Bay is the other one. |

Take a trip to the Bay.......... |
