and we're off. First across the long causeway with
splendid views towards the hills which are our destination.

passengers are advised not to stick their heads out of the
windows. Clearances are sometimes just a few inches.
Just for a change, it's not me waiting in a car for the
train to come...
The 14 miles of sometimes precipitous track must require a
huge amount of maintenance. Here are just some of the volunteer force
taking a tea break.
Originally, horses pulled the empty wagons the 14 miles up
the track to Blaenau Ffestiniog to be refilled with more slate. The
train then was free wheeled al the way back to Portmadoc; the speed of
the descent being controlled by three men applying manual braking.
Linda gets a well earned rest as her thirst is quenched.
