We took the shuttle bus service to check
out Mirror Lake. |
I wonder why it's called Mirror lake?
In March 2009 a chunk of Half Dome took out part of the
trail near here.
2.5 on the Richter scale was recorded on that day. |
The lake is gradually silting up after
many years of draining. The intention is, I understand, not to interfere
with nature. |
All very tranquil. |
Then we returned to our car and made the long and
windy road to Glacier Point. An absolute must everybody said. |
On our way I just had to stop at Valley View one more
time. |
When we arrived at Glacier Point, guess what?
No view at all! |
Well, a teeny bit of a view. We were a
bit disappointed, I have to say, but we resolved to come again on
another day. |
A few pics of our hotel, the Wawona, with its
Victorian ambience. |
All very elegant.
In the evenings, an excellent
singer/pianist called Tom Bepp entertains in the lounge. |
Nice comfortable rooms, good service but a tad
eccentric also.
Not necessarily a bad thing. |
One of our meals in the Wawona. |
The following morning we shot off to the
Mariposa
Grove near the south entrance to the park. It is
famous for its 500 or so giant Sequoias. |
Lots of evidence of previous forest fires. |
This particular stump looked quite statuesque. |
You can only begin to imagine the ferocity of the fires
that caused this. |
