Mt Baker is in Whatcom County, Washington State, just south of the 49th parallel in Northwest USA. It was on the homeward leg of our anticlockwise journey starting and ending at Vancouver in B.C.

I guess the name appealed, but also I did get a glimpse of the snowy peak on our previous Canada trip in 2003.

The Inn at Mt Baker was to be our sumptuous home for two nights.

This is the wonderful view of Mt Baker from the Inn at Mt Baker near the small town of Glacier.

It was the fitting end to our trip to be able to enjoy this amazing setting and, of course the welcome and super breakfasts that Carole prepared for us each day.

This area had a huge amount of snow last winter, and there is still a lot left on the upper slopes.

So much so that the warm sunshine triggered this slide across the road near the top of the navigable part of the road

Some tourists are trapped on the far side of the blockage. They make a vain attempt to move the huge blocks of wet snow.

The alert was raised although I later heard that the blockage was not removed that night.

This is the breathtaking view looking the other way from that point in the road. The high temperatures were causing water to run off the remaining snow in little rivulets.

As we started down (after having made a very hairy three point turn!) I saw a furry black head appear above the road verge. This young black bear just carried on as though we weren't there. That's the way it should be.

The North Fork Nooksack river.

As dusk fell lighting the mountain in a rather fetching shade of pink, the ladies decided to use the hot tub.

Later, much later, there was a beautiful clear starlit sky, the sort you only get away from cities and their lights and pollution.
I had no tripod and took this exposure over several seconds by holding the camera against a pillar and not breathing!

I think the bright one is a planet.

Later still, the moonrise was spectacular. At something after one a.m. the bright bead of white moon disk just 'pinged' into view. Carole had seen it the previous night and fore warned us.

Another day, another great view to meet us.

Carole and her husband Bill chose well when they built their magnificent home here.
Down in the local shop in Glacier (population 57) there are a splendid pair of scales made by the 'Computer Scale Co' of Dayton Ohio. Just across the road is Milano's, recommended by Carole and certainly provided us with super food and wine.

Next morning, a refreshing walk along the riverside.

Next, a short drive to Maple Falls and north towards the Canada/USA border.

Mt Baker contd.
