Me and my work

Pawb a i Farn in Manhattan

A small team of us flew out to New York in early June 2002 to make a 'special' edition of the programme in New York. On an earlier recce, the Director and myself had visited several studios in a hectic day to try and find what would be the best venue. Reuters have a studio overlooking Times Square with a large window giving a unique backdrop. We reckoned we could squeeze a scaled down version of the programme in by reducing the Welsh speaking audience down to about 21 (instead of the usual 80+)

Below are a number of pictures following the event through the production day. June 12th 2002.

Sharan Laban (37299 bytes) Sharon Laban, the programmes hard working Production assistant, 'hot desking'  in the Reuters office. Reuters studio, lit and ready to go (134608 bytes)
Wynford Jones, programme director in deep thought... Wynford Jones (25987 bytes)

Rigging and setting (41214 bytes)

Doug Collins, designer, getting a hand in laying out the audience risers (rostra) and chairs.
The roll up set (38583 bytes) Doug designed some lightweight 'roll up' banners which carry the programme title and graphics images on a see through net, so that we can see the 'money' shot of Times Square beyond. There is a scaffold type lighting suspension above with three foot spacing and a collection of mostly ARRI 2K and 1K fresnel lamps. There are also a few 'Peppers' and a couple of Desisti 2K softs. They are driven by a manual twin preset board which is entirely adequate for the task in hand. Reuters studio (42428 bytes)

The lamps, of course, have 110V 'bubbles' and I gain more lumens as a result of their greater efficiency. 132 medium blue in the backlights gives the audience a touch of 'blue rinse' and a bit of continuity with the UK programme.

Reuters studio (34229 bytes) Geraint Lewis Jones, the producer trying out the panel's chairs. The Producer! (37710 bytes)
The Presenter (38834 bytes) Dewi Llwyd, the presenter, getting the feel of his new environment with a background of the ABC TV studios across times Square, behind him. Studio Gallery (35630 bytes) Wynford, centre, rehearsing with Reuters' Technical Director cutting shots.

Sharon and Geraint discussing details of the programme arrangements.

apart from some lamp reflections, all is well and we are ready to record.

Thanks to Bob LeGrassa, Director of Television Support Services at Reuters, Nicole, Andrew and all the guys who worked on the show, for all their help in setting up our broadcast.

We had a little time to ourselves, and maximised it, as you can imagine. Click here for more pics of the Big Apple
