Canada - Vancouver Island

Fort Rodd and Fisgard Lighthouse

The story behind Fort Rodd has a Colonial history. It was built on 18 Hectares of land just a few kilometres from Victoria and contains the remains of three coastal artillery gun batteries and on shore defences. It was built to protect the nearby Naval base at Esquimalt and were in operation until 1956.

day9-38.jpg (14012 bytes) there are magnificent (and to me, quite unexpected) views of the Olympic mountains in the US of A which is just across the Juan de Fuca Strait. day9-39.jpg (9199 bytes) misty atmospheric and totally photogenic.

Given the choice of a replica of Ann Hathaways cottage which was nearby, I think we did the right thing in coming here.

Very few tourists and a well co-ordinated and interesting site.

I would have been distracted by those beautiful mountains.

day9-43.jpg (30338 bytes) The beaches in B.C. just have to be some of the most interesting I have ever seen. day9-44.jpg (25227 bytes) Meanwhile, officers quarters at Fort Rodd.

Having worked in the field of lighting, I do like a good searchlight. This was one of several at Fort Rodd; in beautiful condition and well over a metre and a half in diameter.

Fisgard Lighthouse, a short walk away from Fort Rodd.

As we crossed the beach, we passed this old boathouse which isn't a boathouse at all. The upper bit opened up and one of the searchlights shown above would snap on and thoroughly illuminate the unfortunate enemy boat.

We are on our way home now, and from the ferry, I just had to take this picture of Mount Baker!
