The Gironde is long and wide as it heads north west to
meet the Bay of Biscay. Shelagh and John took us on a tour of the area
around Royan and to the Ile D'Oléron.
Firstly, we visit a tiny and pretty marina/harbour at
Mortagne sur Gironde
Oysters are the main catch here. The boats in the
preceding picture are designed for that purpose only.
Fishing is also a Sunday morning hobby.
A view towards the Gironde
Onward to Royan, a biggish sea side town popular with
tourists. Need I say more?
Lots of boats of all shapes and sizes.
Will someone tell me what this is please?
Lunch time is good for a laugh and also some people
watching.
Colour all around
Then across the viaduc du Oleron and to the
Citadelle and the Chateau.
Would have been a nice atmospheric picture
had the little road train not arrived as I was composing the picture!
Old doors are always appealing to a
photographer.
Nearby, there is the rustic little port des Salines.
Artists and artisans seem to have taken over from the indigenous oyster
fishermen.
Although there are still some reminders of
the fishing industry around.
