The Very Reverend John
Lewis M.A. Dean and Vicar.
The
Cathedral Church of SS Peter and Paul is the mother church of the Diocese
of Llandaff and is the seat of the Bishop of Llandaff.
The
Diocese, one of the six dioceses comprising the Province of
The
Church in Wales, covers the general area of South Wales bounded
by Cardiff in the South East to Neath in the South West, the Heads of the
Valleys to the North and Rhymney Valley to the East .
It's difficult to get a clear view of the cathedral as the
slope drops away quite steeply towards the river Taff. This is the
southern elevation.
Brilliant winter sunshine backlighting the cobbled path down
to the Cathedral.
An unusual and striking piece of Epstein's work entitled
"Majestas" dominates the view as one
enters. It was built as part of the considerable restoration following Second
World War damage.
Seen from the other direction and somewhat closer, its full
majesty can be appreciated.
The western end beyond the choir stalls
This plaque in memory of the architect who was in charge of the
extensive restoration.
These items are from the ship named after the city of
Llandaff.
This little chap had to wait outside in the cold!
Meanwhile, up on the roof...
Some splendid views towards Cardiff city centre over Llandaff
fields
Having spent many years suffering the ravages of the
weather, these gargoyles are spending their retirement indoors.
These guys, a Roman and a Chinaman are also retiring
indoors, having been replaced during restoration.
Early morning winter light can give beautiful effects on doors and
through windows....
One night, I was walking back to my car
which was parked near the Cathedral. There was a moon, and thin clouds
were scudding quickly across an autumnal sky.
