Well, a small part of the Dales to be accurate. In
late April, 2004 I accompanied my wife who was attending a two day course in
a large hotel near York: Aldwark Manor. The weather was unseasonably warm and sunny
and I took the opportunity to get some cycling in in and around nearby
Kettlewell.
Kettlewell is a delightfully eclectic village in upper
Wharfedale and was the location for some of the film 'Calendar Girls'. In
fact, it was whilst watching the film that I had the desire to revisit the
countryside that I had last visited some thirty years ago with my future
in-laws in a bouncy Morris Minor. Needless to say, my camera accompanied me
on my 43 mile journey starting at Kettlewell and taking in Hawes, Askrigg
and Aysgarth as well as some pretty impressive Yorkshire moorland scenery.
The map alongside shows my cycle route highlighted in
yellow starting from and ending at Kettlewell.
Hi Mike,
I was Googling
images of York Minster and got into your web site…just spent a LONG
time looking through your photos of York and the Dales. For the
last 3 summers I have visited a friend who lived outside York and
your photos brought me back to the scenery and emotions of those
wonderful times J
My friend has now moved to Devon (Honeychurch) and next year I’ll
visit her there, and see a whole different part of England.
Thanks for the
lovely, unexpected trip down memory lane!

We arrived after one of the wettest car journeys I can
ever remember. The hotel was set amidst some fine golfing fairways which
were not causing any danger that evening.
One night spent with Jean in luxurious surroundings
before I set off on my own for deepest Yorkshire.
Just one hour or so takes me into the heart of Wharfedale
and to my Bed and Breakfast venue in Kettlewell.
Chestnut Cottage, a delightfully positioned and cosy
cottage not far from a tumbling peaty beck.
This was the view from my bedroom window.
I took a walk down towards the town centre past the
church. The evening sun is a tonic after the previous days continuous rain.
As well as being the epicentre of wonderful
walking country, it has another claim to fame, much of the successful
British Film, Calendar Girls was filmed here.
The village store featured as a corner shop: which it is!
My eating place was the Kings Head. A nice beef and ale
pie washed down with a couple of pints of Black Sheep Ale. Nice one.
That's not the pub, by the way, just looked good behind
the Inn sign.
Time for a walk around the small church.
These wee people were lurking in the garden
of the house above.
Some beautiful stained glass windows in the church.
The beck carves right through the centre of
the village.
One is never too far from a place to sup
good ale, either.
Nice to see a gradient sign that hasn't been Euro graded
to 25%!
After my meal there's still time to climb that hill to
watch the sun go down 'o'er town'.
Leaving the road, I join one of Yorkshires green lanes.
