Of course, it's the west coast of California that gets all the plaudits. We decided to give L.A. a miss but missed a turn and saw rather more of the traffic jams of that city than I really wanted to.

Our destination was Santa Barbara, a lush and very classy resort indeed.

One of the first things that struck me was the number of bronze statues around the town. Some of them very inventive indeed.

er, no, that's a real person.

and this is a live turtle moving in a statuesque way.

The old Court house in town has to be seen to be believed. It's a gorgeous building and still houses courts in current day usage.

Such clever use of shape and colour reminds me of Barcelona.

Super views from up top.

Inside, some beautifully painted wall murals celebrating the arrival of the Spanish settlers.

I suppose what surprised me was the fact that photography was not forbidden. Almost encouraged!
Walkies around the town and more colour: this time that of the Jacaranda trees.

The shopping centre was a very pleasant precinct with a character of classy yet practical design,
