Port Alberni and Victoria

Victoria is the capital of Vancouver Island and is a very well sited and attractive city. On our way south, we did first call into Port Alberni, a logging community.

But of course! All those trees need lots of outlets to change them into telegraph poles or lengths of 3 X 2!

Not sure who the chap at the end of the pier is, though.

I guess he's been stood around there for quite some time.

Another day, another waterfall. This time it's the little Qualicum Falls.

Next we are searching for lunch in Cowichan Bay in a Deli that sold cheese from all over the world.

The American message has been going for a long time now as this old dispenser shows.

You're never far from the all American symbol in this part of Canada. Indeed, I hear that there is a dire shortage of the bald headed eagle in the States compared with here. Am I right?
Once we arrive in Victoria, we have an appointment with Susan Vasilev who I have never met! It's a long story but suffice to say that she has Welsh family connections and had responded to that part of my web site some time ago.

She was good enough to show Jean, Caroline and myself all around the splendid Parliament buildings. Her husband is a member of the current opposition party. She was a former ministerial assistant.

All through the wonders of the web.

The building, constructed in 1893 was designed by a young 25 year old creative architect; yes that's 25 years old. His name was Francis Rattenbury and it was all in honour of celebrating Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee

I thought the interior was pretty spectacular.

The following photographs help to show what a class act it is.

across the road, there's another classy building: the Empress Hotel.

Afternoon tea is reputed to be very, very nice.

That evening, we experience an excellent welcome and hospitality at Jean's second cousin Bev and her husband Cary in Brentwood Bay.

Here are Bev and Jean, Caroline and Kristi who are also related somewhere back up the family tree!
